ISO 50001 management-system approach

ISO 50001:2018 provides a framework for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system. Its purpose is continual improvement of energy performance, including efficiency, use and consumption.

Start with a useful baseline

Whole-site utility bills show the overall result but rarely explain the cause. Submetering can separate major loads such as compressed air, refrigeration, HVAC, process-support utilities or buildings. Normalize cautiously for production, weather, occupancy or operating hours where those factors are material.

Significant energy uses

Focus attention on equipment and processes that represent a large share of consumption or meaningful improvement potential. This prevents an energy program from spending disproportionate effort on small plug loads while major utility systems run inefficiently.

Operational controls matter

Schedules, deadbands, pressure setpoints, temperature targets, idle-state logic, leakage and simultaneous operation can create large differences in energy use without replacing major equipment. Any adjustment still needs to respect production, product quality and safety requirements.

Verify the result

After an improvement, compare energy performance over a representative period and account for relevant variables. Avoid claiming savings from a simple before/after total if production or weather changed significantly.
