Map critical dependencies

Production may depend on electricity, process cooling, compressed air, ventilation, water, drainage, access control, communications and specialist contractors. A criticality review should trace these dependencies rather than rank assets in isolation.

Plan by scenario and consequence

Useful scenarios include utility interruption, severe weather, water intrusion, equipment-room loss, building-access restriction or critical supplier unavailability. The goal is not to predict every event but to identify common dependencies and decision points.

Define authority before the event

Plans should identify who can shut down or restart services, authorize emergency spend, contact authorities or utilities, communicate with occupants and approve return to normal operation. Technical recovery and organizational decision-making need to align.

Exercise the plan

Tabletop exercises can reveal missing phone numbers, inaccessible documents and unclear responsibilities without disrupting the facility. More involved tests should be designed by competent personnel so the exercise itself does not create an unsafe condition.

Use incidents to improve asset plans

After an event, capture failed assumptions, equipment performance, workarounds and recovery times. These lessons can change spares strategy, redundancy, preventive maintenance or capital priorities.
