BIM is information management, not just 3D
The ISO 19650 series treats BIM in the context of information management across the asset lifecycle. ISO 19650-3 specifically addresses the operational phase and information exchanges involving asset owners/operators and maintenance or works teams.
Handover quality determines operational value
A highly detailed design model can still be poor FM information if equipment IDs do not match operational records, documents are missing or as-built changes were not incorporated. Operational information requirements should be defined before handover.
What makes a digital twin different?
The term is used broadly, but a digital twin generally implies a digital representation kept meaningfully connected to the state or behavior of the physical asset. Some twins use live sensor data; others focus on simulation, condition or lifecycle information.
Link the model to systems of record
A model may be a powerful navigation layer while the CMMS remains authoritative for maintenance history and ERP remains authoritative for financial transactions. Avoid duplicating every record into the model simply because integration is possible.
Information can be sensitive
Detailed facility models can reveal asset locations, security systems, utility routes and other operational information. Apply appropriate access controls and information-security practices, especially for critical or sensitive facilities.
